Two mistakes that could result in your roof having to be replaced

There are certain mistakes which could potentially result in you having to hire a roofer to replace your entire roof. Continue reading to find out what these mistakes are.

Ignoring a termite infestation in the roof rafters

If your wooden roof rafters show signs of being infested with termites, it is important to have a pest control specialist resolve this infestation as quickly as possible, and to then hire a roofer to replace any damaged rafters. Failing to act quickly in this situation could be a serious error that may lead to you having to get your whole roof replaced. As termites burrow through and consume the wood from which the rafters are made, the rafters' structural integrity will become more and more compromised.

This loss of structural integrity could have a negative impact on the entire roof system, as the rafters' main function is to support the other roofing materials' weight. If the rafters start to weaken, the upper layers of the roofing system will eventually begin to buckle or sag, which could cause these materials to develop cracks or holes. Once this type of damage has occurred, a full roof replacement is usually necessary. As such, if you wish to avoid the expense and inconvenience of having your property's roof replaced, it is vital to take action immediately if you notice any signs of a termite infestation in your roof's rafters.

Doing DIY roof maintenance

Your well-intentioned efforts to maintain your roof could potentially inflict serious damage on this area of your home, potentially to the point where you have to pay a roofer to replace the entire structure. For example, if like a lot of homeowners, you like to use a pressure washer to get rid of the dirt, moss, bird droppings and other debris that accumulates on your roof, you may end up causing major damage to the external sections of the roof. The force with which the water hits the roof could, for instance, lead to the formation of multiple holes and indentations.

Additionally, if the condition of the roofing materials has already deteriorated, hosing them down with large quantities of water could also lead to some of this water seeping through the materials and coming into direct contact with the timber underlay or rafters. This could result in these wooden components rotting away. Given this, it is best to arrange for a qualified roofer to perform your roof maintenance instead of trying to do it yourself.
