Are You Paying Enough Attention to Your Roof?
Posted on: 5 July 2018
Perhaps no part of your home is more important than the roof when it comes to protecting your family and assets. Yet many homeowners do not pay enough attention to its maintenance and simply take it for granted. In a country where weather extremes are commonplace, it makes a lot of sense to cast an eye skyward from time to time to see whether the roof is standing up to this onslaught. What are some of the things you need to be looking out for?
Loose or Dislodged Tiles
If you've invested in a tile roof, this is one of the most durable solutions you can get. However, it is not immune to weather damage, and you need to check it closely for cracks and to see whether any other tiles may have become dislodged. In particular, look at the ridge capping which keeps a row of tiles in place. If this were to break, a good part of your roof may be open to the damaging elements. Even the smallest crack can eventually allow moisture in.
Tell-Tale Signs
You should make a habit of checking the ceiling in your rooms nearest to the attic to look for dark spots or leaks. If you notice anything, then you should pay a visit to the attic to see if you can spot the culprit. More often than not it will be a faulty or cracked tile, but the guttering around the property could be blocked and causing a backup.
Clean Guttering
Speaking of gutters, these need to be kept clear at all times, especially in the autumn season. If not, they will become clogged with leaves and other debris, and this will push water back into the roof cavity. Furthermore, the guttering system could start to rust, and this will require further maintenance in the near future.
Checking for Algae
While you are checking the gutters, look underneath them and back towards the eaves. This is an area where moss, algae and fungi can thrive, and you should remove any buildup periodically.
Making a Habit
It's a good idea to check your roof once per month. Write it in your diary so you don't forget, and it will quickly become a habit. However, if a major storm rolls through, you should also inspect the surface for any signs of damage.
