3 Gutter Problems that Can Hurt Your Roof
Posted on: 26 June 2018
Guttering helps drain the water from your roofline and move it from the house into an easily irrigated area. One of the issues with this is that sometimes the guttering can become clogged or damaged due to weather and extreme winds. If this happens, you will need to have the gutter repairs done as soon as possible. This is to help reduce chances of roof damage. Here are three problems that you need to arrange gutter repairs for as soon as possible in order to save your roof.
Loose Guttering
If you have had severe storms or wind damage, tree limbs may have hit the gutters. This impact can cause the gutter to become loose and even detach from the roof. This loosening and detachment may result in several issues such as the anchors being ripped out of the roof area, opening the roof to water damage, and pulling on the rest of the gutter causing the same issue. You will need to have the wood of the roof repaired if a rip or pull has occurred and have the gutter reattached. Your other anchors may be checked during this as well to ensure no other areas are affected by that impact.
Rusted Anchors
You may not think that rusted anchors for the gutter can cause an issue. The truth is there are several issues that can result from rusted anchors on your gutters. One of the first issues is that the rust can lead to breakdown of the anchors. As the anchors break down, they can lead to the gutter becoming loose, which pulls on the wood. Also, you may have issues with the rusted anchor holding dampness or water behind the anchor against the wood. This can cause wood rot and damage to the roof line that will need to be repaired. Check your anchors and replace any anchors that are rusted. If you notice soft wood or warped wood underneath, call a contractor.
Bent Gutters
When gutters are bent due to impacts or other related damage, it can lead to severe roofing problems. When the gutter is bent, it usually cracks any finish on the gutter material. This crack can lead to water getting to the actual metal material underneath. That will lead to rust, which will lead to breakdown of the gutter. As the gutter breaks down, it can cause pulling because it won't be able to maintain the normal water weight during heavy storms or debris that may stay in the gutter. This may also lead to further rusting and breakdown, causing longer areas of breakdown on the gutter and on the roof from the pull and weight.
If you need these gutter repairs, the longer you wait to have them done, the higher the chance that roof damage will occur. If you need these repairs, contact your roofing or guttering contractor. They can schedule an appointment and help with questions you have regarding the repairs, including pricing.
